Madeira island is all about peaks and hills. Ideal conditions for the water to fall fast down.
That’s why the Portugese owners built there hundreds of kilometers of levadas – stony canals to bring the water to the seaside.
Now levadas have become one of the most famous attractions of Madeira. You can accompany many of them – down or up – walking along their sides.
Some have dried up – completely or temporarly. I followed one of them with a bit of fear. Steep wooden stairs turned to a very narrow path close to the abyss. One wrong step and … But I survived 🙂

Yes, I wish I could travel there again. The lonely walks (I was there without my family) along the levadas were so exceptional.
